The COOL MUSCLE 3 (CM3) is an integrated AC servo motor: motor, encoder, driver, controller and I/O are combined in a single compact package, so a system can be built without a separate driver, controller or control panel. This guide covers the models CM3-17S50A, CM3-17L50A (42 mm frame), CM3-23S50A and CM3-23L50A (56 mm frame).
One guide, three control types
The CM3 operates in one of three control types. All three run on the same hardware — the control type is selected in software from the Cool Works Quick initial setup wizard (Pulse Type is the factory default). See the Communication Functions page.
Each control type has its own dedicated page covering its description, wiring, settings, operation and examples — start there if you already know which type you are using:
|
Control Type |
How the motor is commanded |
Typical use |
|---|---|---|
|
Pulse train input signals from a host pulse generator (position controller) |
Drop-in replacement for stepping motor systems |
|
|
Up to 8 Motion Data points pre-stored in the motor, selected and started by digital input signals |
PLC-driven machines without serial programming |
|
|
CML commands (A/S/P and execution commands) sent directly over RS-232C |
PC / controller commanding the motor over serial |
The pages below cover the material common to every control type, with type-specific passages marked inline. Content that applies to every control type is written once, without any marking.
How type-specific content is marked
-
A section that applies to a subset of control types carries the subset in its heading — for example Origin Detection (I/O and Direct Type) or Pulse Input Method (K41) (Pulse Type).
-
Short type-specific passages inside common text appear in colored panels: blue = Pulse Type, green = I/O Type, purple = Direct Type.
-
Parameter, command and signal tables carry an Applies to column (All / Pulse / I/O / Direct / I/O・Direct).
